Artist’s Statement The tidal waters and shoreline of eastern Western representational art and Abstract Expressionism have both been strong influences in my work. I am interested in the tension between several opposing elements: perspective drawing versus free-form washes; illustrative delineation versus gestural markings; line versus color; mechanical, geometric shapes versus atmospheric color fields. I use these oppositions to create a tension between three dimensional representation and a flattening of space. Gestural brushwork and rich colors are dominant. I also layer paint to create more complex color and texture. Beginning with an understanding the physical forces behind a visual image of the natural world, the paintings evolve out of the daily progression of the painting process.
