ARTIST'S STATEMENT

The forms in my paintings are organic in the sense that they emerge and evolve out of themselves. They are, in
part, a reflection of the organic forms in nature. The textures and contrasts in nature when elements meet:
mountains and trees against the sky, water meeting rocks and land, vegetation growing from earth are reflected in
my work. The contrast, together with the rhythms of these elements, provides the drama that gives emotional impact
to the viewer. On another level I am interested in creating moving shapes that reach, on paper, an inevitable place
of rest.

ARTIST'S BIOGRAPHY

After graduating in 1956 from Westtown Friends School near Philadelphia, I
came to Penn State, eventually enrolling in the Art Department in 1957. At
the same time, a young man named Bruce Shobaken came to Penn State
to tach printmaking and painting. I knew I wanted to paint using the
structural elements of shape, line and color. It was my extraordinary good
fortune to have Mr. Shobaken as a teacher. He taught me how I could forge
a visual language using organic growth of form.

After graduating in 1960 in Applied Art, I enrolled as a graduate student at
Penn State because I wanted to continue my work with Mr. Shobaken. I
graduated as Master of Arts in 1964.

From 1964 until 1984 I lived in Port Matilda, PA. I continued to paint and to
exhibit in universities and art festivals.

From 1984-1994 I had the opportunity to live in Nürnberg and Berlin,
Germany. Through Das Brücke Museum in Berlin and other European
museums I came to know the German Expressionists: Emile Nolde, Ernst
Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Max Pechstein, Gabriele Münter as well as
Paul Klee and Paula Mordersohn-Becker. These painters have influenced
me greatly.

From 1994-1997 I lived in St. Neots, England in the vicinity of Cambridge. I
exhibited at the Halesworth Gallery in Sussex.

From 1997 until 2008 I lived and painted in Bellows Falls, VT. I have
exhibited extensively in the Southern Vermont area. Currently, from 2008 to
the present, I live and work in Brooklyn, NY.
