Artist's Statement

Puffed up faces of both impatient cashiers and customers at Shoprite are depicted in recent watercolor studies. I imagine forcing all those faces into a painting, juxtaposing the grotesque big blond wigs of orthodox women against the hidden hair of Muslim women. Both of them are drawn together for the common purpose of hunting food for their families in this sterile, yet packed world of Shoprite. Vendors, with carts bearing breads and flowers roam the aisles, calling out their wares for sale, as in any outdoor foreign market. I live in Brooklyn, urban village of the world, where different ethnic communities live side by side. Shoprite, like a mini U.N., represents Brooklyn, a place filled with people from all over.
