BARBARA ZAVADA Artist's Statement This series of drawings and paintings mirrors some of my initial perceptions regarding the South West's vibrantly diverse landscape; its pristine yet colorful canyons, the sun burnt plains alive with Indian lore, the luscious valleys, and the wide expanse of blue sky. It is these emotions and values that I am conveying through color and symbols. Hiking and camping in the deep and remote canyons of the South West's back country have drawn me ever closer to nature. In particular, the untamed multicolored cliffs, canyons and wild flowers in their full spectrum of seasonal abundance have left an everlasting impression on me. This evokes in me a creative urge which I am ready to set down and capture on paper and canvas. My earliest recollections are of a playful yellow ball dancing in the sky. My fascination with the vibrant bursting of sunrise and the glowing of sunset started me painting with circles in the brightest palette, trying to capture the purest color spectrum. In a relatively stressful life I find moments of peace and elation working in solitude as a colorist. The overwhelming response to my work gives me both a feeling of serenity and uplifting happiness. If I can instill this same uplifting feeling in others and gain acceptance then l will have reached my goal. With my art I want to appeal to the senses and provoke a gut feeling of the joy this world has to offer.
